BATON ROUGE, LA – August 22, 2026 – A beautiful exploration of the human experience, Ivan C. Devall’s new book, “The Weight of Words: Stories that Linger,” blends memoir, history, and captivating storytelling in a collection of twenty-one literary essays, offering readers a window into the quiet but profound significance of everyday lives.
Rooted in the traditions and landscapes of the American South, “The Weight of Words” is far more than a simple recounting of moments. Through eloquent prose and timeless themes of faith, legacy, and family, Devall traces how ordinary individuals, through both words and choices, leave an impact that echoes across generations. The stories range widely—from Civil War battlefields and rural Louisiana to post-Soviet Russia and medieval France—yet all are brought together by a unifying concept of legacy and the endurance of character over time.
Ivan C. Devall, an accomplished writer with a deep appreciation for history and the human spirit, describes the book as a celebration of the extraordinary in ordinary lives. “Growing up in Louisiana,” Devall explains, “instilled in me a love for stories and traditions that outlast us. This book honors the idea that even simple lives can inspire extraordinary legacies.”
Illustrating each essay is the work of Louisiana artist Preston L. Craig, whose twenty-one original pen-and-ink drawings enrich the literary experience with their evocative and timeless artistry. Together, the narratives and illustrations invite readers into a richly textured world filled with tender humanity and historical depth.
Each thoughtful essay challenges readers to reflect on their own history, family, and the quiet ways in which character shapes both self and society.
For those who cherish reflective narratives and Southern landscapes, this heartfelt book is a timeless reminder of the enduring power of memory and the sacred found in the mundane.
“The Weight of Words” (ISBN: 9781972090305) can be purchased through retailers worldwide, including Amazon and Barnes & Noble. The hardcover retails for $26.99, and the ebook retails for $6.99. Review copies and interviews with the author are available upon request.
From the Back Cover:
STORIES THAT LINGER.MOMENTS THAT LAST.
From Sunday dinners under an old oak tree to long days on offshore oil rigs in the Gulf, from Cajun cooks and cattlemen to artists, pastors, and booksellers, The Weight of Words gathers stories of ordinary people whose lives turn out to be anything but small. Rooted in the rural Deep South yet stretching to Russian river cities and medieval cathedrals, these essays trace how memory, faith, craft, and place can shape a soul over a lifetime.
A polio-stricken preacher with a tender God, a Cajun cook named Anatole, a machinist with a missing fingertip, a cattleman who drinks the blood of his steers, an aging painter who still phones the White House, a Russian engineer finding her way in a new world – all move through these pages with quiet dignity and surprising grace.
These stories are meant to be savored slowly, like good coffee on a front porch. For readers who cherish reflective narratives, Southern landscapes, and the sacred hidden in the everyday, The “Weight of Words” offers a reminder that the lives we think of as ordinary are often the ones that stay with us the longest.
About the Author:
I like old things. Things that have stood the rest of time: old friends, old books, old music. I’m no Luddite—I get around just fine on my smartphone and computer—but tables and chairs are more my kind of technology. They’ve been around for thousands of years and will probably be around for thousands more.
I was once a decent athlete, a high jumper at LSU, where I also earned a degree in Construction Management. These days, I still lift weights, but my real passion became long-distance road cycling—a journey that began around 1990. After 30,000 miles on a narrow bike saddle, though, sitting’s not what it used to be. So much for biking.
I read a lot. These days, my tastes lean toward the classics, great literature, history, biography, the Bible, and philosophy. I’ve dabbled in biblical Greek and Russian and can read a little of both.
I’ve done my share of traveling, in the U.S. and abroad. Eventually, the part I liked best was hearing the U.S. passport control agent say, “Welcome home.” I hope they still do that—it was a nice touch.
Most evenings you’ll find me in a recliner with the lights off, incense burning, and music playing—country, gospel, or Bach. I don’t watch much TV, unless LSU is playing.
I spent my career around craftsmen. Given the choice between having a beer with the CEO of a Fortune 500 company or an ironworker, I’ll take the ironworker every time. He’s bound to have better stories.
I’ve got great kids and grandkids and, all things considered, a life I’m grateful for. Except, maybe, for that pain when I’m sitting.
