CMS deadlines leave eligible clinicians and groups a limited window to confirm reporting plans, review data, and consider applicable exceptions.
SIOUX FALLS, SD, UNITED STATES, November 4, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — As the 2026 performance year enters its final months, Foxfire Systems Group is sharing year-end readiness considerations for optometry practices participating in the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS). The guidance focuses on confirming participation status, reviewing reporting plans, and using current Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) resources to assess applicable deadlines and exceptions.
For the 2026 performance year, CMS states that clinicians and groups planning to report a MIPS Value Pathway (MVP) must register by November 30, 2026. CMS also states that the application window for the MIPS Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances Exception and the Promoting Interoperability hardship exception closes December 31, 2026. Whether a practice is eligible for MIPS, an exception, or a particular reporting pathway depends on its individual circumstances and current CMS requirements.
“MIPS preparation is more manageable when it is treated as an ongoing operational process instead of a year-end project,” said Korry Petterson, Visionary at Foxfire Systems Group. “The final months of the year give practices an opportunity to review what has been tracked, identify missing information, and resolve questions while there is still time to act.”
Foxfire identified five areas eligible clinicians and groups may wish to review before the end of the 2026 performance year:
1. Confirm participation status. CMS provides the Quality Payment Program (QPP) Participation Status Tool, which allows clinicians to review participation information by National Provider Identifier. Practices can use the tool and current CMS resources to determine the status of individual clinicians and groups.
2. Confirm the reporting pathway. Depending on eligibility and participation, reporting may occur through traditional MIPS, an MVP, the Alternative Payment Model Performance Pathway, or another applicable option. A practice can identify its pathway before assigning year-end responsibilities.
3. Review MVP registration, when applicable. Practices that intend to report an MVP can verify that registration is completed before the November 30 deadline. Registration requirements may include selecting the intended MVP and confirming how the individual or group will report.
4. Review data and exception options. Practices can review the completeness of data collected during the year and identify information that may require follow-up. They can also examine current CMS criteria for exceptions. An exception may not apply in every situation, and an application may be required.
5. Assign ownership for remaining steps. Documenting the review process and assigning responsibility for open items can help prevent year-end actions from being lost among clinical, billing, and administrative responsibilities.
CMS’s 2026 timeline states that MIPS final scores will be available in summer 2027 and that payment adjustments determined by 2026 final scores will take effect in 2028. Foxfire recommends that practices rely on current CMS guidance rather than assumptions carried over from a prior performance year.
