Box Springs Mutual Water Company Celebrates Completion of New 1.3-Million-Gallon Water Storage Reservoir

MORENO VALLEY, CA, UNITED STATES, August 13, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Box Springs Mutual Water Company (BSMWC) celebrated the completion of a new 1.3-million-gallon water storage reservoir marking a major milestone in the Company’s century-long history of serving the Moreno Valley community with an “official presentation of the keys” to the general manager by the Board of Directors.

The new reservoir significantly increases the Company’s resiliency and strengthens its ability to reliably serve customers during peak demand and emergency conditions. The project was funded through a $2.3 million California Department of Water Resources (DWR) grant for drought resiliency, ensuring the cost of construction was not passed on to BSMWC customers.

“This reservoir represents more than new infrastructure. It represents our Board’s ongoing commitment to safe, reliable water for the next 100 years,” said John McDermott, Board President of Box Springs Mutual Water Company. “We’re grateful this project was made possible without placing the financial burden on our customers, thanks to the support of the Department of Water Resources.”

Box Springs Mutual Water Company has served the Moreno Valley area since 1920, when local landowners formed the Company to bring water to their lands. For more than a century, the Company has relied on local groundwater, supplementing its supply since 1964 through a partnership with Western Municipal Water District. Today, BSMWC serves approximately 750 customers across a 440-acre service area.

“We’re here to celebrate the completion of a new water storage reservoir that significantly increases our system’s drought resiliency,” said Mark Iverson, General Manager of Box Springs Mutual Water Company. “This reservoir is the first step in a broader infrastructure plan. A new production well is planned nearby to further strengthen our groundwater supply, and we’ll follow that with a treatment plant to remove PFAS from our groundwater.”

The project was also celebrated by CalMutuals, a statewide organization providing advocacy and operational support for mutual water companies. CalMutuals was founded in 2013 and has grown from 14 members to more than 600 today.

“Projects like this reservoir show what’s possible when small mutual water companies have access to the right resources and support,” said Lisa Yamashita-Lopez of CalMutuals. “Securing grant funding like this DWR drought resiliency grant is exactly the kind of outcome CalMutuals works to make more accessible for members statewide. We hope other mutuals will follow the example of Western Heights and Box Springs in elevating what mutuals can achieve together.”

Dave Armstrong, leader of the CalMutuals Disaster Response Taskforce, echoed that sentiment. “Mutual water companies like Box Springs are the backbone of water delivery in many California communities, often operating with limited staff and resources compared to larger public agencies,” Armstrong said. “As Box Springs moves forward with plans for a new production well and future PFAS treatment, this is exactly the kind of long-term planning CalMutuals supports through its educational and operational resources.”

Looking ahead, Box Springs Mutual Water Company plans to continue investing in infrastructure to protect and strengthen its water supply for the community.
